                Squid X

Squids have two eyes you say?  I thought it was cute this way!  Call it a cyclops octopus if you want, or give it 2 eyes!
This is a fast and easy knit!  Fits ages 1-4

Materials:
1 skein Lion Brand Home Town USA Super Bulky in blue, or grey if you want (or pink, purple, green whatever!)
16" size 11 circular needles
Size 11 DPN's
Size 7 DPN's (5's would work too, just make slightly smaller eyes.  You could always add a round or two.)
Small amounts of white and black worsted weight yarn for the eyes.

Gauge:  4" = 10 Sts and 14 Rows

Abbreviations:
CO = Cast On
K1P1 = Knit one, Purl one.  This makes a stretchy ribbed pattern
K2Tog = Knit two stitches together
BO = Bind Off
KFB = Knit into the front of the stitch, don't pull the old stitch off the needle, instead knit again into the back of the same stitch.

Hat:
Using the German Twisted Cast-On Method, CO 40.  Join, being careful not to twist the stitches, and mark the begining of your round (I always just use the tail of my work as a marker though).

Knit in K1P1 Ribbing for 3 rounds.
Knit every round until hat measures about 4.75" from the CO edge.  (If you'd like to make the hat for an older child, knit until piece measures 5" from edge).
Now we start the decreases!
Round 1:  *Knit 6, K2Tog.  Repeat from * across the round.
Round 2:  Knit around.
Round 3:  *Knit 5, K2Tog.  Repeat from * across the round.
Round 4:  Knit around.
Round 5:  *Knit 4, K2Tog.  Repeat from * across the round.
Round 6:  Knit around.
Round 7:  *Knit 3, K2Tog.  Repeat from * across the round.  Switch to use the DPN's whenever work becomes too tight.
Round 8:  Knit around.
Round 9:  *Knit 2, K2Tog.  Repeat from * across the round.
Round 10:  Knit around
Round 11:  *Knit 1, K2Tog.  Repeat from * across the round.  10 stitches remain.  Break yarn, thread through remaining stitches and pull tightly closed.  Weave end in securely.

Legs:
Using the size 11 DPN's, CO 3.  Knit an i-cord for 4 inches.  BO.  Repeat 7 more times (making 8 legs).  Feel free to make the legs longer if you'd like.  Using the tail, attatch the legs around the hat, above the ribbing, being sure you leave enough space for your child's face in the front.

Eye:
Use size 7 DPN's and Black yarn, CO 4.  Join and knit one round.
Round 2:  KFB every stitch.
Round 3  :Knit around
Round 4:  Join the White color.  Knit one round.
Round 5:  KFB every stitch.
Round 6:  Knit around.
Round 7:  KFB every stitch.
Round 8:  Knit around.
Round 9:  *K1, KFB.  Repeat from * around.
Round 10:  Knit around.  BO leaving a long tail.  Use tail to close circle edge of eye, and then to sew eye onto hat.  Repeat if you desire two eyes.  Done!  Wasn't that easy, and so cute!
